The MUN experience of Jannicke Martin

Jannicke is one of our award winning alumni from our Oxford delegation. Underneath she advises you to apply to a LeidenMUN delegation and its unique preparation track.

“Let me tell you about two girls. The first one just moved to the Netherlands without really knowing what she got herself into. Turning red the second she has to stand up and say something in front of more than two people and knowing about the United Nations almost as much as Timor-Leste. The other girl however knows that raising your voice, standing up for something and believing in a cause is powerful and can be found within everyone. She knows that there is never just one perspective and that the future is created on a daily basis in politics. She knows that engaging, interconnecting and respecting are crucial parts to understanding what is happening all around. Funny enough that these girls are the same person, me, but only eight weeks time apart.

MUN for me was like a climb. Since I’ve never heard of it before, I was convinced it was like any other debating society. I honestly have never been this wrong before. The beginning was overwhelming and I immediately started doubting myself as to what I was actually doing there. Little did I know that the journey I was about to begin would give me so much more than an insight to politics. It gave me true friends, more experiences than I can count, and most importantly the chance to discover new sides to myself. I’m not joking when I say that I learned more in these last weeks than I did during any other time. However, it should be noted that it is on oneself to take advantage of this opportunity by taking the track serious, but when you do it there should literally nothing holding you back from an incredible lifetime lesson, not only for inside the classroom or lecture hall, but rather for the rest of your life. The conference itself is really just the cherry on top, so enjoy every moment of it.”
